Alka Yagnik was born into a Gujrati family on March 20, 1966, in the city of Kolkata in India. Her parents are Dharmendra Shankar and Shubha Yagnik, and she is their first child.

Career
Alka Yagnik moved to Mumbai after Akashvani Calcutta encouraged her to mature her voice. She started singing bhajans at six. Alka debuted with Thirkat Ang in Paayal Ki Jhankaar (1980). The song Mere Angane Me from Laawaris followed (1981).
Ek Do Teen in Tezaab was her breakthrough song (1988). This song won her the first of seven Filmfare awards for Best Female Playback Singer. Alka’s career spans over four decades, and BBC’s top forty Bollywood soundtracks include 20–22 of her songs.
Alka has sung in around twenty-five languages, including Hindi, Assamese, Malayalam, Gujrati, Marathi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and 15 Pakistani songs. She has sung 2,486 Hindi songs in 1,114 films. She and Asha Bhosle have the most Filmfare Awards.
Anand Bakshi’s lyrics made her 1993 seductive song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai contentious. Yagnik won another Filmfare for this song. She sang another sensuous song, Dil Me Leti Hai, for the 1994 film Amanaat with Kumar Sanu and Ila Arun, composed by Bappi Lahiri.
She also volunteers. Alka supports several Indian nonprofit trusts that empower girls. She and Sonu Nigam released Phool Khil Jaayenge in 2014 to promote child health.
