Biography

Trejo was born on Temple Street in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, California, to Mexican-American parents on May 16, 1944. He is the son of Delores Rivera King and construction worker Dionisio “Dan” Trejo (1922-1981).

Trejo was the outcome of an adulterous affair; Delores’ husband was fighting in World War II at the time. In 1943, his parents met at a dancing hall in Highland Park, Los Angeles.  From 1949 to 1965, he didn’t see his maternal half-sister, Dyhan, or Delores; his father barred his mother from seeing him when Trejo hurt his arm in her care.

Trejo’s father frequently abused him. Trejo and his family briefly lived in San Antonio, Texas, shortly after his birth; they fled Los Angeles because Dionisio was wanted by authorities for stabbing another man. They returned to Los Angeles after a year, and Trejo’s father turned himself in.

Trejo shared a room with his cousins at their grandmother’s house by 1949. Alice Mendias was his stepmother and “his only source of comfort” when he lived with his father.

Trejo began taking marijuana, heroin, and cocaine between the ages of eight and twelve. Trejo’s uncle Gilbert exposed him to all three and was responsible for Trejo’s first heroin overdose. He relocated to the diverse Los Angeles community of Pacoima when he was 13 and claims he did not face racism growing up. Years later, he bought his childhood home and frequently lived in it.
