Career
Grissom went to Paul J. Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Florida, where he played baseball with Riley Greene. In 2019, he batted.389 while pitching to a 0.82 ERA as a senior. He was taken in the 11th round in the 2019 Major League Baseball draughts by the Atlanta Braves and signed, foregoing his commitment to play college baseball at Florida International University.
Grissom made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Braves, where he batted.288 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 44 games. Due to the postponement of the season, he did not appear in a minor league game in 2020. He began the 2021 season with the Low-A East’s Augusta GreenJackets before being promoted to the High-A East’s Rome Braves in September.
He hit.319/.418/.464 with seven home runs, 43 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 87 games between the two teams. Grissom returned to Rome for the start of the 2022 season. He was promoted to the Mississippi Braves of the Double-A Southern League in mid-July. Prior to being called up to the main leagues, he had 91 at-bats in 22 games with Mississippi, hitting .363/.408/.516.
Baseball career
Following an injury to Orlando Arcia, the Braves picked Grissom’s contract and promoted him to the major leagues on August 10, 2022. That night, he made his MLB debut as Atlanta’s starting second baseman against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run over the Green Monster off Darwinzon Hernández and a stolen base.
Vaughn Grissom became the youngest player in either the American League or the National League history to homer and steal a base in his major league debut at the age of 21 and seven months.
Following the free-agent departure of Dansby Swanson, Grissom entered the 2023 regular season as the Braves’ starting shortstop. Grissom competed for the starting shortstop position alongside Arcia and Braden Shewmake during spring training. Grissom and Shewmake were optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers on March 20 in favour of Arcia.
