The polio paralyzed his entire body from the neck down. He was placed in an iron lung, which is a machine that helps people breathe when they are unable to do so on their own.

Alexander contracted polio at the age of six and was paralyzed for life. He was only able to move his head, neck, and mouth. He was taken to Parkland Hospital, where he was placed in a ward of iron lungs with hundreds of other children who had also contracted polio. Alexander almost died in the hospital before a doctor noticed he was not breathing and rushed him into an iron lung.

Samuell High in 1967, becoming the first person to graduate from a Dallas high school without physically attending a class.
