Andre Marinus de Ruyter (born March 20, 1968) is a businessman from South Africa who previously worked for Sasol and Nampak.
He was appointed CEO of Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electrical provider, in December 2019. On December 14, 2022, it was reported that he would stand down as CEO of Eskom soon.

De Ruyter was born in 1968 in Pretoria. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pretoria, a Bachelor of Civil Law certificate and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of South Africa, and a Masters of Business Administration from Nyenrode Business University.

Career
In December of 2019, de Ruyter was given the position of Chief Executive Officer at Eskom, the publicly owned energy provider in South Africa. During his time in office, according to The Citizen, de Ruyter went after “coal theft syndicates,” neglected maintenance, and managed a transition toward renewable sources of energy. However, while his presidency, South Africa had some of the most severe blackouts in the country’s history.
On the 12th of December in 2022, de Ruyter submitted his resignation as the Chief Executive Officer of Eskom. On the following day, when he was at work, he allegedly drank a cup of coffee that contained cyanide, which he was unaware had been added to the beverage. Following the provision of medical care, a report of attempted homicide was filed with the South African Police Service.
Andre serves on the boards of Nampak Plastics Europe Ltd. and Nampak Holdings (UK) Ltd. In addition, he was the CEO of Sasol Olefins and Surfactants Pty Ltd. Four months after Phakamani Hadebe stepped down as CEO and Director of Eskom Holdings, Andre was appointed to the same positions.
