Biography
Born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, on January 13, 1997, Connor McDavid’s early life was shaped by his parents’ passion for hockey. His mother, Kelly, briefly played recreational hockey before focusing on skiing, while his father, Brian, was a devoted Boston Bruins fan and high school hockey player.
Connor’s hockey journey began at the tender age of three, practicing on rollerblades in the family basement. The next year, his parents, eager to nurture his talent, enrolled him in organized youth hockey, even slightly bending the rules to allow him to play with older children.
At six, McDavid’s local youth hockey association in Newmarket prohibited him from competing against older players. Believing house league hockey would be too tame for their gifted son, his parents enrolled him in an Aurora, Ontario, hockey program. There, under his father’s coaching, McDavid led the York Simcoe Express to four Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships.
In 2009, McDavid’s York Simcoe team, which also included future professional hockey player Sam Bennett, participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.
Seeking greater challenges, McDavid left the Express in 2011 to join the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), the same team he and his father had defeated in the previous year’s Ontario Hockey Federation championship. The decision, though driven by McDavid’s hockey aspirations, came at a social cost, as he had to leave behind many of his friends from York Simcoe.
