Biography
Justin Roiland was born on February 21, 1980 and raised in Manteca, California, a small city in the Central Valley. He attended Sierra High School for the first three quarters of his senior year, but then transferred to Manteca High School for the remainder of the year. He graduated in 1998.
After high school, Roiland attended Modesto Junior College, a community college in Modesto, California. He is dyslexic, a learning disability that affects reading and writing. In a 2015 podcast interview, Roiland alleged that he was sexually assaulted by a cousin at the age of 7.
Roiland is Jewish. Although he has not publicly discussed his religion in detail, but he has made some references to it in his work. After graduating from CalArts, Roiland worked as a storyboard artist and animation director on shows such as Chowder and The Sarah Silverman Program.
In 2004, Roiland began contributing to Channel 101, a comedy television show created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab. It was on Channel 101 that Roiland met Harmon, and the two began working on Rick and Morty.
Rick and Morty is a short animated film that aired on Adult Swim’s The Animated Shorts Program in 2009. The film was well-received by critics and audiences, and Adult Swim ordered a full series of Rick and Morty, which premiered in 2013.
