Who is Kike Hernandez?

Enrique José (Kike) Hernandez González (born August 24, 1991) is a Puerto Rican professional baseball utility player for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, and Boston Red Sox.

Nicknamed Kike Hernandez was drafted by the Astros in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2014 and has since played every position except catcher. He has spent the most time in the outfield and second base. Hernández was a member of the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series championship team and won Fielding Bible Awards in 2020 and 2021.

Enrique Hernández is the eldest child of Enrique Hernández Sr., a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and his wife Mónica González, owner of a boutique in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. His mother is Cuban. He has two younger sisters. He began playing baseball at age six and participated in international youth tournaments in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.

Hernández attended high school at the American Military Academy in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He was 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m) tall in his junior year, but he grew 5 inches (130 mm) during his senior year.

Career

Hernández was drafted by the Astros in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2014 and was traded to the Dodgers later that year. He has been a member of the Dodgers since then, winning the World Series in 2020.

Hernández is a two-time All-Star and has won two Fielding Bible Awards. He is known for his hustle and energy on the field, and he is a fan favorite in Los Angeles.

In 2021, Hernández signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. He played well for the Red Sox in 2021, batting .250 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs. He also had a strong postseason, batting .408 in 11 games.

In 2022, Hernández was injured for much of the season. He played in only 93 games, batting .222 with six home runs and 45 RBIs.

On July 25, 2023, the Red Sox traded Hernández back to the Dodgers in exchange for Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman. Hernández returned to the Dodgers wearing the number 8, as his old number 14 was retired by the team in honor of Gil Hodges.
