Neil deGrasse Tyson (born October 5, 1958) is an astrophysicist, author, and science communicator from the United States. He worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University from 1991 to 1994.

In 1994, he became a staff scientist at the Hayden Planetarium and a visiting research scientist and speaker at Princeton. In 1996, he was appointed director of the planetarium, where he managed a $210 million rebuilding project that was finished in 2000.

He has been the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City’s Rose Center for Earth and Space since 1996.

Neil deGrasse Tyson was born in New York, United States of America, on October 5, 1958. He will be 62 years old in 2021. His mother, Sunchita Maria Tyson, was a gerontologist, and his father, Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was a sociologist. His siblings are Stephen Joseph Tyson and Lynn Antipas Tyson. Known to be an agnostic, he is of Afro-American and Puerto Rican origin. 

Regarding education, he enrolled in Bronx public schools. The Bronx High School of Science confers on him a certificate. Moreover, graduates of Harvard College’s Bachelor of Arts in Physics program. He receives an MA in astronomy later on. In addition, he got his M.Phil. in astrophysics in 1989 and his Ph.D. in astrophysics in 1991.

Career

He began his profession by studying cosmology, galactic astronomy, and astrology. He has formerly held positions at the University of Maryland, Princeton University, and the American Museum of Natural History. In 1994, he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a researcher while still an exploratory member at Princeton University.

He is in charge of the planetarium’s $210 million improvements, which were completed in 2000, as chief. In 2001, Tyson was appointed to the President’s Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry, and in 2004, he was appointed to the President’s Commission on the Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy, also known as the “Moon, Mars, and Beyond” commission.

 Tyson has served on The Planetary Society’s governing board as President and Administrator. He was also the host of the PBS show Nova ScienceNow until 2011. He gave a talk at the Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason, and Survival conference in November 2006. In May 2009, Tyson and a comedian co-hosted a show called StarTalk.
