Jonathan McDonald Van Ness (born March 28, 1987), also known as JVN, is an American hairstylist, podcast host, and television personality. He is best known for his work on the Netflix series Queer Eye, as the grooming expert on the web series parody Gay of Thrones, and as the host of the Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness podcast.

Jonathan Van Ness was born on March 28, 1987, in Quincy, Illinois, to parents Mary Winters and Jonathan Lyle Van Ness. He described himself as coming “from a family of journalists,” as the sixth generation of his family’s newspaper.
This refers to Quincy Media and the Herald-Whig, the company’s local flagship newspaper; Van Ness’s mother is the vice president of Quincy Media, and he is a descendant of the Oakley family, which has controlled the company since the 1890s.
Van Ness was s£xually abused by an older boy at church when he was younger, which laid the groundwork for his self-destructive behavior. He used online chat in his early adolescence to socialize with, and sometimes meet, older men for coitus.

His coitus and drug addictions grew to include methamphetamine. His grades dropped, and he lost his cheerleading scholarship; he left after one semester to pursue a career in hairstyling.
Van Ness received her education at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis. He worked in Arizona for five years after graduating before moving to Los Angeles in 2009.
